On Saturday, January 19th, 2008 the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Boston Bruins celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of hockey pioneer Willie O’Ree breaking the color barrier into the NHL.  Willie made is NHL debut with the Boston Bruins on January 18th, 1958 and, in doing so, made NHL history.

Willie was honored before, during and after the Bruins afternoon game against the New York Rangers.  During one of the ceremonies on Saturday, it was announced that the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) would be making a donation in the amount of $10,000 in Willie’s name to the SCORE Boston program.

Several members of the SCORE Boston program were featured in the festivities of the day and several played a mini-game between periods of the Bruins game against their sister program, Ice Hockey in Harlem.  Following the Bruins game, both diversity teams played a full length game on the Garden ice where SCORE Boston arose victorious in a very closely contested match.

Players, parents, coaches and volunteers of SCORE Boston were impressed with the generosity of the NHL and the Bruins during this special day for one of our program’s biggest ambassadors.  It was a special day for Willie and the SCORE Boston community feels lucky to have been a part of it.
